Cottage open this weekend

THE historic Manor Cottage in Southwick Street is to be open to the public this weekend as part of the Heritage Open Days event.

The cottage will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, and 2pm to 4pm on Sunday.

Visitors can see the oldest map of Southwick, dating from the 1780s and pictures of the recent archaeological dig at the Cottage.

Society secretary Nigel Divers said: "The recent archaeological dig at the Cottage created huge public interest in the building.

"Unfortunately for safety reasons we could not show people round while work was in progress. Now the dig has finished everybody is welcome to come and see the inside of the building.

"Most of the finds have gone for scientific examination, but visitors can see pictures and a description of the work.

"The intricate carpentry of the 15th century roof is well-worth seeing and we have what we believe is the oldest detailed map of Southwick on show.

"By popular request we have also retained our exhibition about Southwick during the Second World War."
