Sian Honnor and Jade Lally both competed in the games held in Glasgow this summers. Sian won a gold medal in triple lawn bowls and Jade Lally took away bronze medal in the women’s discus.

Last week they were honoured by Horsham District Council when they were presented with a certificate and a gift of flowers by chairman of the council Brian O’Connell at the town’s Park House.

Lucy Wood, who won a silver medal in the ladies’ hockey, was not able to attend, but will be honoured in due course.

Sian, from Storrington, said: “It’s lovely for the council to recognise the achievement. It means a lot in the place you live.

“I’m not a Sussex girl, but I have been made to feel very welcome. Things like that go a long way.”

Jade added: “It’s a first. I must keep working hard to get more of these.”

The presentation was just a few hours before a council debate on the future Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, where Jade has campaigned to keep a running track.

She said: “It will be good if we can improve what we’ve already got. I cannot see the benefit of getting rid of or reducing what quality facilities we already have.

“We are a successful centre at Broadbridge Heath. We have GP referrals, badminton, athletics, growing membership.”
