Council issue statement over rejected £80m renovation bid

Arun District Council have issued a statement following yesterday's unanimous desicion to turn down an £80m renovation plan of Bognor Regis.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Arun District Council remains committed to creating new jobs and increasing visitor numbers to Bognor Regis by regenerating the town.

“Members of the Council’s Development Control Committee have unanimously voted to refuse the application for four reasons.

“These reasons principally include failure to provide sufficient levels and an appropriate mix of affordable housing, traffic and concerns over lack of parking, and a number of other concerns including accessibility, and design.

“Another key concern throughout the debate was the matter of viability and that the applicants had not satisfactorily demonstrated to the Council that the scheme was viable and that all elements were deliverable and sustainable.

“The applicant can now choose to appeal the refusal or prepare a resubmission and,in doing so, seek to address concerns set out within the refusal reasons.”

Councillor Gillian Brown, Leader of Arun District Council, said: “Arun has listened carefully to the wishes of the public in and around Bognor Regis and has consulted widely on the matter.

“Yesterday’s decision will not deter the council from its continued regeneration efforts for Bognor Regis town centre and its seafront.”
