Council looking to formally own Bognor beach

Officials at Arun District Council are preparing to formally own Bognor Regis beach '“ almost 40 years after the council took on the town's prized asset.

But, in spite, of owning the tourism hotspot it has failed to put that fact on the Land Registry.

Bognor Regis Civic Society deputy chairman Hugh Coster said: "I'm sure this is just an administrative oversight, but it is typical of the fact Arun does not seem to pay enough attention to Bognor.

"We've had the rejection of Asda, then there was the refusal to allow Argos to open and now we have the fact the council hasn't even bothered to register the seafront with the Land Registry.

"Someone in the council has blundered. I just hope that registering the seafront now will not cost council taxpayers a lot of money."

An Arun spokeswoman said: "The council does legally own the promenade at Bognor through its use, occupation and maintenance over the last

40-plus years.

"This is the subject of statutory declaration which is being prepared to register the council's title with the Land Registry."
