In support of Love Your Market fortnight, which ends on Tuesday May 31, and the council’s ongoing Buy Local campaign, the free pitches will be available on Friday or Saturday market days for the next two weeks.

Launched by the National Association of British Market Authorities in 2012, the celebratory fortnight was created to recognise the uniqueness of markets, which face increasing competition from internet traders and out of town shopping.

Councillor Peter Smith, cabinet member for planning and economic development, said: “Markets are a great way for local people and their businesses to showcase their wares. Crawley is traditionally a market town which dates back to the 13th century so we’re delighted to support this campaign along with the town’s history.

“As a council, we’re very keen to diversify the market offer and would encourage local arts and crafts enthusiasts to give it a go – you never know, it could be the beginnings of a new future!”

Held in the Broadway and Haslett Avenue on Friday and Saturday, the market currently includes stalls for fruit and veg, a florist, hot food vendors and watches and repairs.

Arts and crafts enthusiasts who want to try their hand at being a market trader just need merchandise and a display table; the council will supply the pitch, stall and insurance for the next two weeks (until Saturday June 4).
