Council says noto tall new homes

PLANS to build five new four storey homes in the Strand Quay area of Rye would be overbearing and out of keeping planners on Rye Town Council have said.

Peasmarsh based Untitled Development Ltd want to replace a former war-time dance hall at St Margarets Terrace with five new four-storey dwellings.

Rye Mayor Shaun Rogers said: “The existing building has been there for a while but is now dilapidated.

“The proposed new building will be far too tall for this area of town and would be four or five metres above other existing properties.

“It would be out of character with that part of town and overbearing.”

Cllr Heidi Foster said: “It is too many houses and too high for that site.

Cllr John Breeds said: “What worries me is the affect it would have on the overall view of the townscape.

“It is totally inappropriate to have something of that height there.

“Cllr Mike Eve said: “We do have a falling down house in an area of town where it is logical to put more houses, but at that height it could be pushing it too far.”

Cllr Nigel Jennings said: “If we allow something of that four storey size it could create an unwelcome precedent.

The Ramblers Association also argue that St Margaret’s Terrace is legally only accessible by foot and that plans for the new homes include vehicle access.

Rye Town Council’s planning committee voted against the application but Rother District Council’s planning committee will have the final say.
