Council takes lead on dog control

Dog owners could be forced to keep their four-legged friends on leads in particular areas of Rother under proposed new dog control orders.

Following consultation with town and parish councils, Rother District Council has revealed a list of areas which could come under the new order, which will require dogs to be kept on leads.

In Battle, the High Street, Market Square, Market Road and Market Road car park, Mount Street from the High Street entrance to the car park, Abbey Court and the recreation grounds at North Trade Road and at Telham have all been suggested to be included in the proposed new orders.

Other areas include Burwash High Street, Queens Gardens at Etchingham, The Clapper Recreation Ground in Robertsbridge and Sportsfield at Sedlescombe.

Staplecross Playing Field and Staplecross Herdman Playing Field were also to be included, but were removed from the proposed order following a request from Ewhurst Parish Council as the areas are already subject to the exclusion of dogs.

The parish says it will make its own order in due course.

A public consultation will now take place and a final decision on the orders will be made at a later date.

Rother has previously made Dog Control Orders requiring the removal of faeces and excluding dogs from certain areas in the district.
