Council told: Follow the new rules or else!

ROTHER council will be stripped of its authority unless it implements new legislation designed to drive up standards.

That is the stark message from council leader Cllr Graham Gubby.

Addressing the first meeting of the council's cabinet since the May 1 local elections, the leader set out in a 40-minute address the executive's priorities for the coming year.

Cllr Gubby described the move to Comprehensive Performance Assessment as a landmark in Rother's development.

He outlined seven priorities against which Rother would be measured, identifying the lead cabinet members responsible for them and the overview and scrutiny committees which would study them.

The priorities are:

*Reduction in crime and fear of crime

*Engaging and working with young citizens

*Provision of affordable housing

*Improving employment opportunities

*Integrating local transport

*Improving the planning service

*Improving waste disposal and recycling

But he warned that in diverting resources to these priority areas, other services might have to take a back seat.

Tough political decisions would have to be made.
