Councillor backs parents in calls for safe school access

Parents’ calls for safer access to Harbour Primary School at Newhaven have been backed by a Lib Dem councillor who has launched a petition.

Cllr Carla Butler, county councillor for Newhaven and Ouse Valley and district councillor for Denton and Meeching, said problems would only get worse when the Western Road site closes and joins the Churchill school site in September.

Parents took photos of cars parked ‘dangerously’ and reported them to the police and this week launched a Facebook page.

“There have always been problems parking at Church Hill and Western Road sites, however recently the school have quite rightly tried to stop people parking on the zigzag lines directly outside the Church Hill site which has now sparked some parents to park across the road from the zigzags causing an obstruction to oncoming traffic on an already narrow road,” cllr Butler said and called for East Sussex County Council to take action.

Headteacher Christine Terrey said: “The huge majority of our parents take extra special care to ensure the safety of the children who attend our school by walking and cycling to school or parking sensibly.

“Unfortunately a few parents have upset everyone by putting their own needs and convenience before the children’s safety. The school supports all measures or proposals that will improve safe access to our site.”

The petition is at and calls for a 20mph zone and enforceable road markings.
