Cllr Bantick, aged 80, completed the ride in atrocious conditions as the tail-end of Hurricane Bertha swept across Britain.

Cllr Bantick said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who supported me on the 2014 Prudential London/Surrey Ride on August 10 and helped me to raise that amount.

“The cycle ride was undertaken from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in the worst weather conditions that I had ever experienced. There was monsoon type rain beating down on us.

“An amazing number of cyclists had punctures. We were diverted away from Box Hill and Leith Hill as it was considered too dangerous.

“However, I was lucky, and arrived at the finish in the Mall without mishap in a time of 6 hours 28 minute having stopped several times to take on necessary energy refreshments.

“Of the 24,000 starters 20,709 finished. I may not have had the challenge of those hills but the weather made up for it.”
