Councillor warns of traffic chaos at gas main works

REPAIRS to a gas main has meant that Bexhill Road has been closed to eastbound traffic and a diversion has been put into place.

This diversion takes traffic around Filsham Road, St Vincents Road and West Hill Road to get back onto Bexhill Road.

Already the closure of this road has caused major congestion in surrounding areas, especially in St Saviours Road which looks as though it will now be used as an attempted shortcut to the delayed traffic much to the dismay of local residents.

Local ward Councillor Matthew Beaver has already written to the Lead Member for Transport at the county council, Councillor Matthew Lock, not only to convey residents' concerns about the increase in traffic but also to question why this is being done only a short while after the road was resurfaced.

Councillor Beaver said: "Already we are seeing a vast increase in traffic numbers in St Saviours Road and the surrounding areas posing an increased danger to pedestrains in that area.

"Already we have had one accident on Filsham Road when a child was knocked down and injured and we still have eight weeks before Bexhill Road is reopened.

"I urge parents and children, motorists and pedestrians to show a increased awareness of the situation so that there are no more accidents or injuried caused."
