There were cheers from the public gallery as councillors voted against the controversial proposal at a planning meeting inside Worthing Town Hall tonight.

Councillors praised the developer for its previous work in the town but said its proposal for the corner of Grand Avenue and West Parade, in Worthing, fell short of its usual standards.

Councillor Hazel Thorpe said: “It doesn’t match with what I feel is an amazing design. It doesn’t knock me for six. I totally understand residents’ fears.

“I’m sorry Ben (Cheal, Roffey Homes managing director) this doesn’t meet your usual high standards and I’m going to refuse.”

In total, the council received 811 written objections to the development with many citing the plan as too tall, bulky and not in keeping with the surrounding area.

Councillor Vicky Vaughan said she felt the quality of the design had been compromised for profit.

The public gallery was full to capacity and more than 20 members of the public had to be turned away.

Following the meeting, those opposing the development welcomed the result.

Campaigner David Clark, of Grand Avenue, said: “We are very pleased. Obviously it’s not the end of the story. This is just the start potentially should they appeal.

“We are very grateful to the council for supporting the planning officers’ recommendation and we hope Roffey will come forward with a better design that’s more in keeping with the area and reflects the height of the buildings around.”
