Counting for the East Worthing & Shoreham and Worthing West constituencies was expected to begin earlier this morning.

But ballot papers were still being verified at 2.45am, with the counting of them not able to start until that process is complete.

Ballot papers from Arun are still in transit to the count at Lancing.

Turnout across the two constituencies could be as high as 70 per cent.

Worthing West Green candidate David Aherne said: “I think the delay is only to be expected with a high turnout but it always amazes me that we don’t use electronic counting.”

The candidates have arrived at the count, with most expecting Tory candidates Tim Loughton and Sir Peter Bottomley to hold their seats.

UKIP targeted East Worthing and Shoreham but candidate Mike Glennon admitted tonight second place would be a ‘glorious victory’.

Sir Peter said he was hopeful of a Conservative majority result nationwide, with current exit polls suggesting the Tories could fall just short of an overall majority.

He said with Labour set to lose almost every seat in Scotland, the exit polls implied the party would do better in England – but early results showed them failing to make gains.

On a local level, he said: “On a lighter note, I am always pleased if Worthing West’s proportion of the vote for the Conservatives is higher than East Worthing.”
