County apprenticeship scheme

With more and more employers demanding on-the-job experience and skills the County Council wants to give more youngsters the chance to learn on the job.

The new scheme will give young people the chance to gain experience whilst learning all the skills necessary to become a valuable member of the workforce. It means young people in East Sussex have the chance to provide employers with just what they need, which is especially important during these difficult financial times.

Young people successful in gaining a place on the council's apprenticeship scheme will be placed on a one year contract and receive an apprenticeship wage, along with a range of training and support. After the year it is hoped they will be inspired to apply for permanent positions within their chosen field at the County Council or the wider local workforce.

A pilot scheme for the project began in October last year (2008) and saw the County Council Youth Development Service partner up with Sussex Downs College to give 8 young people the chance to train in youth work. These youth work apprentices are based across the county in Lewes, Eastbourne, Wealden, Hastings and Rother, providing a valuable service to their local communities.

The County Council is now looking at the opportunities to expand the apprenticeship scheme to other departments.

Cllr Meg Stroude, the County Council's Lead Member for Children and Families, said: "In these times of economic hardship it is so important that our young people have the skills and experience to succeed at work.

"This apprenticeship programme gives them the tools and confidence to do just that."
