Brighton & Hove City Council voted on Monday (January 11) to go ahead with a consultation into moving one week of the summer holiday to an off-peak time of year, allowing parents the chance to purchase cheaper family holidays.

A county council spokesman said changing the length of the summer holidays in East Sussex was not being considered at this time but added: “If Brighton & Hove do decide to make this change it’s something we will watch with interest to assess the impact such a move might have.

“Should East Sussex decide to consider a change in the length of the school summer holidays it would only be undertaken through full consultation with schools. ”

The idea of changing the dates of the summer break in the hope of securing cheaper holidays received a mixed reaction on social media.

Some felt it was a good idea, while others predicted travel companies would simply move the goalposts.

Writing on the Herald’s Facebook page, Gemma Smith said: “Companies will just put their prices up. They’re only in it for making money, so if they can make more they’re gonna take the opportunity and run with it.”

But Stephen Haselden questioned whether travel firms would change their methods “drastically just to cater for one city”.
