Bognor Regis resident Jackie Collins, from Burnham Avenue, was about to enter the slope up to the tip around 11.45am, just after the alarm was raised.

“We couldn’t go up the slope – across that slope was about four or five men in yellow jackets,” she said.
“There was one standing on the little island in the middle and he said ‘you can’t go in there’.”

After asking why not, she said the man replied: “I can’t tell you but the police are due to arrive at any minute.”

Minutes later she said she saw three cars arriving and blocking off the main entrance.

“You could see the cars were blocking the opening off,” she said.

Bomb disposal experts are now at the scene.
