Horsham striker Terry Dodd admitted winning the title was thirsty work on Saturdayas he shot to internet stardom.

The talisman became an internet sensation as he was filmed missing an open goal, but then enjoying a cheeky refreshment from a home fan behind the goal during the game.

Dodd had already scored a hat-trick in Horsham’s 11-1 win over Hailsham which saw them lift the Southern Combination League Premier Division title.

By doing that he broke a 44-year-old record, becoming the first Horsham player to score 30 goals in a season, a feat previously held by the late Mick Browning dating back to 1962.

The video of the forward swigging a beer, taken by Horsham fan Connor Harris has received more than 3,500 retweets on Twitter, has been picked up by the national press and had more than 740,000 views on Facebook.

Speaking exclusively to the County Times, Dodd, who was trending on Twitter last night, said: “I just never expected it to get how it has. There are two things I am good at, missing open goals and drinking beer.

“It’s made me an internet sensation. It’s quite nice and it gives Horsham a bit of publicity and name.

“It wasn’t planned or anything. My phone has been non-stop, every five minutes I have got 20 notifications.

“It’s great and hopefully I might be on Soccer AM next week! It was a great day, a good day for Horsham and the fans - and to top it off I passed 30 goals and broke the record.”
