COUNTY NEWS: Man charged after Gatwick airport evacuation appears in court

A man who was charged after Gatwick Airport was evacuated has appeared in court.

Jerome Chauris, 41, of no fixed address, was charged with possessing a dangerous article in any part of an aerodrome and having an article with a blade or point after the North Terminal of the airport was evacuated on November 14.

Thousands of people were forced to leave the airport after police received reports of a man putting a ‘suspicious package’ in a bin.

People were moved to hotels after the terminal was closed for more than six hours.

The incident cost the airport and passengers an estimated £1.2m

He pleaded not guilty to both charges at Lewes Crown Court today (Monday, December 14), a Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said.

A trial date has been set for April 11, 2016.
