Sussex staff have found an unusual way to send a homeless hound to sleep each night '“ reading the dog a bedtime story.

Canine carers at the Dogs Trust Shoreham have realised Red Ted struggles to sleep without a bedtime routine.

This includes a grooming session, a final night-time stroll and being read a story from a book of bedtime tales.

Staff have also realised they need to leave a bedside light on through the night to stop Red Ted from barking, because the German Spitz rescue dog is so afraid of the dark.

Tracey Rae, Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre Manager, said: “Red Ted is such a sweet soul – we want to do everything we can at the rehoming centre to ensure he has a settled night and feels more relaxed, even if that means reading him a bedtime story!”

The four-year-old pooch has spent 445 relaxed nights at the charity.

Staff have worked closely to help boost the dog’s confidence, as Red Ted arrived at the rehoming centre rather wary of new people.

“He is one of the most fun dogs here,” said Ms Rae.

“Red Ted has endless amounts of character and energy, and everyone has their fingers crossed that he’ll find a loving home and someone to have slumber parties with.”

Red Ted is looking for a quiet, adult-only home, without visiting children or other pets and a garden.
