County splashes the cash on Angmering flood defences

ANGMERING has been awarded more than £17,000 from a fund set up to help protect communities from floods like those which hit the village 13 months ago.

The centre of the village was completely under water after the Black Ditch burst its banks, flooding homes and businesses in Water Lane, Station Road, The Square and Arundel Road, as well as the village hall.

Now, Angmering is one of the first four communities to be given help by West Sussex County Council’s £1.25m Operation Watershed Active Communities Fund, for two projects.

Sylvia Verrinder, an Angmering parish councillor, successfully made two applications to the fund on behalf of the parish council. The first, for £3,863, will go towards a webcam to be installed at one of the culverts upstream on the Black Ditch, enabling anyone to visit a website to check how high the water levels are 24 hours a day and raise the alarm if they are dangerously high.

A second grant, for £13,759, will go towards better drainage and flood defences at the village hall.

“The flooding of the village hall causes a major problem for us because it acts as an emergency centre during floods and other emergencies,” said Sylvia.
