County vineyards could suffer from EU directive

The growing wine industry in West Sussex could be sharply affected soon by European regulations.

Vineyards in the county, which are all unsubsidised, and have been enjoying increasing success, will be banned from planting any more vines if their sales continue to spiral upwards.

Like other wine producers in this country, they are struggling to keep pace with demand, even though a record 2.8 million bottles were produced in 2004 as taste for locally produced wines increases constantly.
