County wide crackdown on drinking.

Alcohol-fuelled crime is becoming a major problem in West Sussex and action is being taken in many places to establish a widespread crackdown on anti-social drinking in public places.

Figures produced by Sussex Police from May 2004-May 2005 show there were 1,196 reports of public place violent crime and 2,466 reports of criminal damage. Crime hot-spots include Worthing town centre and Central ward with 46 per cent of all incidents. National statistics suggest that out of these, 2,170 incidents of criminal damage and 932 assaults were alcohol-related.

Worthing is one place where a borough-wide initiative has been given the go-ahead by the borough council and is expected to be in place by February or March in time for the summer, when most problems occur.< NO1>
