Couple undertake 100k walkto help blind veteran’s charity

Lucy Brunton and her boyfriend Liam Spencer decided to sign up for the Blind Veterans UK 100k London to Brighton after a friend who participated in the walk last year inspired them.

They are joined by her good friend Lucy Wyse and her fiancé Oli and they are inviting other people to get involved.

Lucy Brunton says: “Lucy told me about her experience at the event last year and all the inspiring people she met along the way. She persuaded all of us with her enthusiasm and we decided it would be a great thing to get together and participate as a team in order to raise money for Blind Veterans UK.”

Lucy feels particularly strong about raising money for a military charity. Her grandfather served in the Royal Air Force during World War II and flew with Bomber command as a Navigator in Lancasters Bombers.

She says: “My grandpa didn’t like to talk too much about his experiences. Unfortunately, the RAF were criticised for large-scale bombing towards the end of World War II which meant that no medals were issued at the time.

“In 2012, the Queen unveiled a memorial in Green Park honouring the 55, 573 airmen who died in Service. My grandpa has since received a medal posthumously which has been presented to my grandmother and made her, and all of us, very proud.”

She now wants to give something back to Blind Veterans UK and feels that the best way by doing this is by taking on a challenge.

Lucy says: “The Blind Veterans UK offers incredible support to vision-impaired veterans that have fought to protect us. Our fundraising will go a small way to help Blind Veterans UK to continue to help.”

Lucy is training with boyfriendLiam to be ready for the big day on Saturday June 6 and they are both aiming to complete the walk in 20 hours.

She says: “It’s great to have someone to train with; I can’t imagine how I’d get on having to do all the training walks on my own. We motivate each other, and there is an element of competitiveness in who’s done the most kilometres each day!

This will be a challenge but there will be so much camaraderie on the day that you’ll forget all about the fact you need to walk 100k, not the mention the beautiful Sussex countryside we’ll get to enjoy.”
