A date for sentencing was set to give time for Garvey to meet a probation officer and for reports to be compiled.

However, Lewes Magistrates Court heard on Monday that Garvey had failed to meet with probation officers as his wife had misplaced the letter with the appointment details. As a result he could not be sentenced.

Garvey, 29, punched Mr Whittaker in the face several times because he was angry one of his pub regulars had been thrown out of the Trek. He faces a maximum penalty of six months in jail or a 5,000 fine.

In issuing a second date for sentencing on May 8 magistrates' chairman Mrs Manya Sheldon stressed the importance of Garvey attending the rescheduled probation appointment.

'You won't get a second chance,' she warned.
