Cows killed in collision on Angmering by-pass

The cars struck the animals after a herd of around 30 cows strayed on to the A280 from a nearby field.

Both cows were killed in the collision.

One driver needed to be freed from their car by firefighters using hydraulic rescue equipment to cut away the roof of the vehicle.

They were subsequently taken, along with another driver, to Worthing Hospital to be treated for their injuries, which Sussex Police said were assessed as not being serious.

Mark Phillips, 25, had been driving home from work on the Angmering bypass at the time of the accident, last Wednesday at around 9.45pm.

Mark, of Priory Road, Rustington, said: “I was possibly the first car to pass the cars that crashed, which I had assumed was just a normal accident, as there were no emergency vehicles on the scene at that point.

“I got to the long straight section of the road which bypasses Angmering where I came across a police car coming in the opposite direction, full beams on, which meant I only saw them at the last minute, leading the herd along the road, followed by more police cars behind herding them.

“It was honestly a terrifying experience because I have a small Peugeot and they are very large and very heavy creatures.”
