Litter hot spots have been identified in Heathfield, and the parish council, supported by the district council, is planning a crackdown on the problem.

Parish clerk Diana Francis said their first move was to launch a poster campaign to raise awareness of the growing problem. Monitoring was also to be carried out over the next few weeks by the two councils to see if there were any improvements.

Mrs Francis said the council had been concerned about litter for some time but the situation had deteriorated in recent months with more complaints from the public and the council itself having requested help through Wealden's litter line.

She said the council did not know where the litter was coming from, or who was responsible for dropping it, but it was hoped the monitoring might help to answer those questions.

The areas highlighted as litter trouble spots are a twitten between Station Approach and the High Street, the access to the Station Road east car park and Station Road in the area of the Cuckoo Trail car park.

Mrs Francis said that at a meeting of the council's highways, planning and street lighting committee on Monday, concern was expressed about litter from private properties, particularly Budgens, and Wealden was to hold talks with the supermarket about containing their waste more efficiently.
