Crackdown on speeding drivers

MOTORISTS IN Sussex are being urged to slow down after police reported over 1,600 offences were committed during a week-long Europe-wide speed awareness campaign.

The campaign, which was run in conjunction with the Tispol Speed Enforcement week and alongside the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, saw a staggering 1,691 speeding offences which Sussex police say is disappointing.

Inspector James Biggs of Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit said: “Roads Policing Officers and the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership carry out constant speed checks on the roads of Sussex and it is disappointing to see that so many people continue to speed.

“Speed continues to be a common factor in serious injury collisions despite widespread publicity about the dangers.

“This was a week of concentrated speed enforcement as part of the campaign.

“However speed enforcement forms part of our every day duty and we will continue to conduct this activity in order to reduce the numbers of people killed or seriously injured on the roads of Sussex.

“Speed awareness courses are offered to those who are found to be marginally over the speed limit in a bid to educate them about how their behaviour affects others.”

The enforcement week ran from Monday August 22 to Sunday August 28.
