Crackdown on street drinkers

WORTHING police are cracking down on street drinkers, following complaints from residents.

The police are doing this in response to complaints about street drinkers in the seafront shelters.

According to Inspector Steve Eldridge, of Worthing police, officers will confiscate alcohol and make arrests if justified.

They are also seeking anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs) for the worst offenders.

Inspector Eldridge said: "We have come to the point where we are having to take a hardline approach to this problem.

"There has been a multi-agency Local Action Team in place looking at some of the longer-term issues, but the immediate problems need to be addressed.

"These people can be very intimidating. They leave the seafront shelters and the beach in an absolute mess and spoil the area for everyone."

"We are also seeking anti social behaviour orders for the worst offenders. We have already made several arrests and will continue to do so."
