Crawley charity wool appeal to create blankets for hospital patients

Dedicated fundraiser Maria Hains is appealing to residents for donations of wool to make blankets for visitors and patients Crawley Hospital.

As a result of surge in popularity of home-made crocheted and knitted items, Maria is collecting good quality double knit wool for volunteers to transform into a range of items.

She is also welcoming people interested in making items.

All funds raised from the sales will go to the hospital’s League of Friends charity, which is currently raising money for some surgical equipment.

Maria said: “We have four ladies making teddies, babies’ clothes jumpers and they are selling.

“Any blankets - children’s blankets and adults’ blankets - shawls, mittens and jackets.

“The knitting is so popular. It’s lovely for boys and girls.

“They all come and we don’t have anything left.”

Maria has been fundraising for the League of Friends for decades and she also has a heart for Manor Green School, which has benefitted from her generous fundraising over many years.

She said: “All this is going the League of Friends. I’ve been involved there since the 1970s - cooking and baking there.

“The hospital has got smaller over the years, but it is still very big. My life is there really.”

The League of Friends of Crawley Hospital has been supporting the hospital for more than 50 years.

The charity’s aims are to provide help and equipment for the comfort and well-being of patients, their relatives and staff.

It also contributes towards buying much-needed equipment for the hospital, including scanners for a range of conditions.
