Crawley library marking five year anniversary

To celebrate the anniversary, a programme of event called ‘Now We Are Five’ has been planned. These are:

• Monday December 2, West Sussex Youth Orchestra 5pm to 6pm. Free and no ticket needed.

• Saturday December 7, A Taste of Christmas. A fun-packed day of Christmas cheer. The day will include a special Christmas storytime, free face-painting sessions, craft demonstrations from local clubs and societies, a multi-sensory storytime, and Christmas carols performed by the Weald Choir. Free, and no ticket needed.

• Wednesday December 11, Quiz Night starting at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £3 each and include light refreshments – or bring your own bottle. The event will be a fun evening of trivia.

• Thursday December 12, True Crime in Crawley, from 3pm. Back by popular demand, reference librarian Tim Stanton will be discussing crimes committed in and around Crawley between the 16th Century and the 1950s. The talk will look at the crimes themselves and the response of the local and national authorities at the time. Includes some new images and material. Tickets cost £3 including light refreshments.

• Saturday December 14, Special Pantomime Storytime, starting at 1pm. Stars of The Hawth show, Cinderella, will be reading a story. With special guest Sid Sloane from CBeebies. Free and no ticket needed.

Cllr Michael Jones (Lab, Southgate and Crawley) said: “It’s fantastic news that the library is celebrating its fifth anniversary, and we are lucky in Crawley to have one of the newest and largest libraries in the county.

“Libraries are special and people understandably love them. The line up of events planned next month to celebrate Crawley library’s fifth birthday reflects that. I hope there are many happy birthdays to come, and many years of use by Crawley residents.”

In the days leading up to the launch, 60,000 items of stock stretching for nine miles were moved from Northgate into the new library, and a further 20,000 added.

The £15m complex, which includes a Register Office, has a living green roof, solar heating and a biomass boiler. A café provides refreshment, there is an area for teenagers, and a video wall to provide local colour.
