Simon Edwards undertook the challenge in aid of three charities including Crawley’s St Catherine’s Hospice.

Simon, 42, started running three years ago, after being encouraged by a friend.

He explained: “I booked my first 10k the same day as I bought my running trainers.

“I started on a walk and run training plan where I’d run for five minutes then walk for one minute and it’s gone from there really.”

Ahead of the big day on Sunday he said the 3,000 mile target was a great motivator for him and was ‘what gets him out of the door’.

He has been doing it in memory his friends and his mum died of cancer in 2012.

Speaking after completing the London Marathon he said: “What an amazing day. Today I got to do something I never thought I’d do.

“Things didn’t go according to plan, the last six miles were tough as my legs just ran out of energy and turned to lead, but one guy’s shout of encouragement spurred me onto a sprint finish and a shout when I crossed the finish line.

“I bagged one of the prettiest medals I’ve ever seen, and I’m proud to add it to my collection.

“It was also an emotional day remembering my Mum and other two friends, but an honour to run in support of three fantastic charities who are there for people when it really matters.

“As well as the fantastic support from the whole crowd, it was a real boost to see my family at two points, including my Dad, which in the end made all the difference.”

This year’s London Marathon isn’t the first time Simon has ran in aid of St Catherine’s.

Last year he ran the Brighton Marathon for the hospice.

He said: “I was chuffed to finish in under five hours.

“I chose to run for St Catherine’s after a couple of my friends spent their last days there and I saw firsthand the work St Catherine’s does.

“I thought it’s time to do my bit and help them in memory of my friends.

“Two days before I ran the marathon last year, a friend’s wife passed away under St Catherine’s care so it was particularly poignant running for them.”

Simon has already taken part in events such as the Silverstone Half Marathon, Brighton Half Marathon and Bookham 10km.

There is still time to support Simon in his achievement.
