Crawley mayor opens new Age UK centre near hospital

The Age UK West Sussex chief executive was joined by the Mayor of Crawley to officially open its new hub in Crawley.

Cllr Raj Sharma, was welcomed by Diane Henderson, to cut the ribbon at the centre in Town Barn Road, opposite Crawley Hospital.

The charity has moved from its old home at the Silver Birch Centre in Shackleton Road in Tilgate.

Ms Henderson and the charity hoped the new base would enable more people to access their services.

She said: “We were delighted that the Mayor of Crawley could join us for the centre opening.

“Our new location is in the centre of town and it will provide even more older people the opportunities to socialise, learn new skills and keep active.

“Why not pop by for a cup of tea and cake or one of our home-cooked lunches?”

Membership of Age UK West Sussex Crawley Centre reduces the cost of each activity session and is available for an annual fee of £15.

Activities in Crawley include Tai Chi, painting and drawing, yoga, computer classes, a cinema club and brain teasers.

Joining the organisation gives members access to the charity’s community clubs which run in different areas of Crawley as well as discounted holistic and wellbeing therapies and entrance to all centres across the Age UK West Sussex network‎.

Non-members may attend activities at the discounted rate by purchasing a day membership for £2.

The club has an information and advice drop-in service offering assistance and guidance in topics such as pensions, debt, housing needs and benefits.

For people with difficulties with mobility or transport, the club has two minibuses to pick visitors up from their home.

The centre also organises outings to shops and local places of interest, including to garden centres, tearooms, museums and theatres.

The ‘Out to Lunch Clubs’ take visitors to various places for lunch; members pay for their own lunch and transport is £5 return.
