Cllr Brian Quinn (Lab, Broadfield North) said the works in the shopping parade were due to finish by Thursday, May 19. They included paving and painting works and replacing canopies and lighting.

The Crawley Borough Council scheme started in September 2015 but was delayed for about a month after damage to sewage pipes was discovered.

Cllr Quinn said: “It was really really drab and many residents have been asking me for many years ‘when are you going to do something in the Barton?’

“It looks lovely compared to what it was.”

He hoped the parade would increase footfall but added it lacked a ‘proper retailer’ such as a supermarket.

An official event to mark the end of the works will be held in the second or third week of June, he added.
