Their achievement ended in a ‘Pass Out’ and award ceremony on Friday June 10 where they performed a hose drill and proudly demonstrated the new skills they had learned to their invited family and friends.

FireBreak is an innovative youth programme run by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service in partnership with County Council colleagues from Youth Services. It is aimed at young people between 12 and 14 and actively encourages students to become positive role models for their peers and within their communities.

The course was based at Haywards Heath Fire Station and ran over five consecutive days. The students took part in a range of activities including fire service drills and team-building exercises. They also learnt about the importance of fire safety, the consequences of road traffic collisions and learned life-saving first aid techniques.

Youth instructor Tony Hills said: “It was fantastic to see their confidence and communication skills grow and watch them really flourish as a team. It was a challenging week for them all but they rose to the challenge with real commitment and determination.”
