Crime focus for school's project

Pupils from Eastergate C E Primary School enjoyed a visit from a Sussex Police Neighbour Schools Officer as part of their topic on crime and punishment through the ages.

The youngsters, aged between 10 and 11, spent time with the Sussex Neighbourhood Police Officer to get first-hand knowledge of modern policing techniques and issues, the role of police officers and police staff and the investigation of crimes.

The children, who are from the school’s Apollo Class, enjoyed a trip to the Tower of London as part of the same topic.

The Tower of London has a fearsome reputation as being one of England’s most notorious prisons.

The Year Six children enjoyed linking some of the history they had learned in the classroom with interactive workshops on the site of King Henry’s Tudor Prison, putting themselves into the shoes of the prisoners who lived and died there, listening to stories being read by costumed presenters and exploring the iconic historic space.

The trip to the Tower of London and the visit by Sussex Police were arranged by Apollo Class teacher, Miss Sarah Holden, who was keen to bring the Crime and Punishment topic alive and consolidate what the children had learned during the term.

Miss Holden said: “Off-site trips and encounters with other professionals are so important and such a powerful teaching tool, particularly in Year Six, as the class can feel quite pressured due to the SATs preparation. A trip out or an interactive lesson, takes some of the pressure away and ensures the children feel motivated, stimulated and creates a memorable topic in their last year at primary school.”
