Armed police cordon off area of St Leonards after altercation between two groups

Police were called to St Leonards after reports a male suspect, in possession of a firearm, was seen entering a nearby flat.

The incident happened in Carisbrooke Road, St Leonards, at about 9pm on Wednesday (July 14).

Response officers arrived after witnesses reported an altercation between two groups of males and females, police said.

It was reported that a male suspect was in possession of a firearm and had gone into a nearby flat, a police spokesman said.

Police established a protective cordon in the area and officers from the Tactical Firearms Unit (TFU) were called to the scene.

One suspect, a 41-year-old man, of no fixed address, was found with minor injuries – not related to the incident – inside a flat, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, according to police, and he was taken to hospital by the ambulance service.

Police said officers searching a property seized a gas-powered BB gun.

Meanwhile a 23-year-old man, also of no fixed address, was arrested in a neighbouring address on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, according to police.

Both men have been bailed, pending further investigation, a police spokesman added.
