Arrest after man found with fractured eye sockets and broken leg in Crawley park

A man has been arrested on suspicion of kidnap and grievous bodily harm after a man was found injured in Tilgate Park.

Detectives have reassured people there is ‘no wider threat to the community’ following the arrest in the early hours of Wednesday morning (December 9).

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Patrolling police officers disturbed two men who were acting suspiciously in the area of some flats in Warnham Road, Furnace Green, just before 2am on Wednesday.

“The men made off in different directions but following a police search of the area a man was arrested nearby, and a car was seized.”

A 23-year-old man from Thornton Heath, South London, was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and kidnap.

He has been released on police bail until March 29 while enquiries continue.

Officers are attempting to trace and identify the second man seen in Warnham Road.

A 43-year-old man was discovered in a stream in Tilgate Park with fractures to both eye sockets and a broken leg in the early hours of Tuesday (December 8).

Police said the man has undergone surgery and is recovering in hospital.

Detective sergeant Peter Yarrow said: “We can reassure the public that these events are linked and involve individuals known to each other, and there is no wider threat to the community.

“Meanwhile we also ask the public to remain vigilant and if they see any suspicious incidents they should call the police on 999.

“We would still like to speak to anyone with information about the Tilgate Park incident, particularly four cyclists who were seen in the area.”
