The victim suffered cuts and bruises that required hospital treatment, the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson said: “It is believed the two suspects, along with two other men, drove off in a dark coloured people carrier with taxi markings parked behind the Old Punch Bowl pub.”

The man who used the baseball bat is described as Asian, tall and well-built. He was wearing grey tracksuit bottoms, a blue baseball cap and long scarf around his neck.

The second man is described as Asian with a dark beard and was wearing a grey hooded jumper.

Detective Sergeant Vicki Tomlinson said “This was a particularly nasty assault which happened in a busy part of town on a Bank Holiday.

“We are keen to trace a young family who were inside the restaurant at the time not only because they could provide some key information, but also to ensure they’re spoken to and any welfare needs catered for as this must have been a traumatic incident to witness.”
