Staff at The Royal Oak were redecorating the cellar on Friday evening (June 26), in preparation for the pub's reopening this weekend, when opportunist thieves 'helped themselves' to ten barrels.

Jan Cattermole, owner of the 'Pink Pub' in Chichester Road, said: "The barrels were stacked up outside waiting for collection.

"We had to pay a deposit on them so we've lost more money. We've been closed for three months and we've now lost more money.

"They're no good to anybody because they're tagged. I don't know what they're using them for."

Jan said she didn't know exactly how much the theft would cost the pub but said it was money 'we don't need to lose at this time'.

When asked what her message would be to the thieves, she said: "Just do the right thing and bring them back."

Jan said she has filed a report to Sussex Police but she is still waiting for officers to visit the pub.

Sussex Police said it is looking for three suspects after the incident.

A spokesperson said: "Police received report of barrels being stolen by three men from outside The Royal Oak pub. The incident is believed to have happened around 11pm.

"Anyone with information can report online or call 101, quoting serial 1248 of 27/06."

Ahead of the pub's reopening on Saturday (July 4), Jan said it's an 'exciting but nerve-wracking' time for staff.

She added: "We've been busy getting ready and redecorating. We've had a big clean.

"We are [looking forward to it] but things are going to be very different unfortunately for everybody, us and the customers.

"There are guidelines we've got to adhere to. It's completely different for everybody. We've all just got to be aware and try to keep safe."
