Resident Jason Marsh spotted the word ‘vegan’ spray painted in red across an electricity box at the junction between Hurst Road and North Parade.

But the 47-year-old digital marketing manager said the vandals had struck at two or three other sites around the town too.

He added: “It’s not even a message it’s just like a single word.

“You don’t have any idea whether it’s just somebody who’s pro-vegan making a statement – or whether it’s some kids.”

Jason said the graffiti seemed ‘very Horsham’ and quite middle class.

He added: “Other people are putting ‘death to the police’ and we’re writing statements about animal rights.”

Jason said he isn’t vegan and doesn’t really have an opinion on the subject either way.

He added: “It was more a case of how bizarre it was – unbelievable. it’s quite big and ugly. I don’t really want to have to look at that every time I walk past.

“We don’t normally see that much graffiti in Horsham. I was amazed.

“Obviously all graffiti is absolutely horrendous. We want to keep it [Horsham] clean and tidy.”

A Horsham District Council spokeswoman said: “We are very disappointed to see the graffiti around the town centre which is an act of vandalism.

“Our Streetscene team have been briefed to remove it as soon as possible and we will continue to monitor the situation.”
