CCTV enquiries revealed a man had cycled to the store and locked up his bike, before breaking in and making off in possession of a till containing a small quantity of cash and a brand new bike worth £2,500, police said.

Later that day, the till was found discarded on the beach by a member of the public.

Next to it was a glove which, after being forensically analysed, matched the DNA of Dean Stacey Jackson – a known offender from the Brighton area, police said.

The 32-year-old was arrested and charged with burglary, to which he pleaded guilty, according to police.

At Lewes Crown Court on 29 April, he was sentence to a total of 18 months’ imprisonment – a number of other offences were taken into account on sentencing, police said.
