It is believed the victim was attacked in the gardens before making his way to East Street around 2.27am, where he was discovered with serious injuries. He remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Wolstenholme, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: “I’d like to thank the community for their patience and understanding as we continue to deal with this complex investigation.

“We are following up a number of lines of enquiry, and we are still appealing for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area around that time to come forward.

“We are treating this as an isolated incident and there is nothing at this stage to suggest there is a threat to the wider community.”
