Brighton driver to spend Christmas in prison

A Brighton man will spend Christmas behind bars after being convicted of driving charges.

Martin Stunell, 36, unemployed, of Desmond Way, Brighton, was arrested following a report of a hit and run in Wiston Road, Brighton, at around 2.20pm on Monday, December 18.

The 36-year-old had taken his mother’s blue Ford Fiesta without her consent, and crashed it into another vehicle and a wall, causing extensive damage, police said.

He was located by police at his address, and arrested and charged with failing to provide a specimen of blood for analysis, driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance, failing to stop after a road traffic collision, and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent and being involved in a road traffic collision, a police spokesman confirmed.

Due to a number of previous offences, including driving while disqualified, Stunell was remanded in custody to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, December 19, where he was jailed for 16 weeks, and disqualified from driving for three years and 56 days, the spokesman said.

He was also ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.
