The victims went out for a walk but when they returned to their home in Selsfield Road less than an hour later thieves had broken in.

Amongst the items taken were a Benefinkt and Sons wooden bracket clock, a black Chinoiserie mantel clock by Asprey and a collection of 60 vintage toy cars, mostly red Ferraris, worth more than £5,000.

The burglary happened between 2.40pm and 3.20pm on 24 October.

Sussex Police launched Operation Magpie to tackle burglary across the county.

Detective Constable John Hord, from West Sussex CID, said: “The owners of the property were only out of the house for 40 minutes so I am keen to speak with anyone who may have been in the Sharpthorne area near the Chiddingly estate at or around 2.40pm.

“I am particularly interested in identifying the owners of a dark blue car, similar to a Seat Ibiza, that was seen parked outside the burgled house at the time of the burglary.”
