Car stolen from Worthing pursued along A27 by police - driver charged with 10 offences

The driver of a car stolen from Worthing over the weekend has been arrested following a police pursuit.

According to Sussex Police, a report was received shortly after 6pm on Saturday evening (September 5) that a property in Colebrook Close, Worthing, has been broken into and the keys to a Vauxhall Astra taken.

Patrolling officers spotted the stolen vehicle on the A27 at Lyons Farm just minutes later and gave chase after it failed to stop when signalled to do so.

Officers pursued the vehicle eastwards before it was stopped at Devils Dyke Road in Hove soon afterwards.

James McDonagh, 38, unemployed and of no fixed address, was charged with driving a motor vehicle dangerously, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, driving while above the legal alcohol limit, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, theft of a motor vehicle, burglary and theft, affray and two counts of attempting to assault a person occasioning actual bodily harm, police said.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on today (September 7).

A 16-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of burglary has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
