Computer boss '˜tried to meet young girls for sex'

A man who possessed more than 400 indecent images of children and attempted to meet young girls for sex has pleaded guilty to 14 charges, police have said.

Sussex Police said Peter Fraser Evans, a computer manager, of Bramber Way, Burgess Hill, admitted the offences when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Tuesday February 28.

The 64-year-old pleaded guilty to six offences of possessing 490 indecent images of children, and eight offences of attempting online to arrange contact sexual activity with eight girls aged between nine and 15.

He had pleaded not guilty to a further nine charges of attempting online to arrange contact sexual activity with young girls aged between nine and 15. Police said the charges were not proceeded with, and were ordered to remain on the court file.

Evans is currently on court bail and will be sentenced on April 6.

The investigation was carried out by the Sussex Police Paedophile On-Line Investigation Team (POLIT).

Investigator David Sharpe said: “Officers went to Evans’ address in June 2013 following intelligence that he had indecent images of children. He was arrested and bailed, and during the subsequent forensic investigation of his computer it became clear that he had also, between 2010 and 2011, systematically engaged in indecent on-line chat, trying to arrange to meet young girls for sex.

Police said no meetings ever took place.

A spokesman added: “None of the images are believed to be of local children and there was no evidence to suggest that any of the chat related to girls in the area.

“Enquiries were made but it did not prove possible to identify the people with whom he had been in contact. The data extracted from his computer did not provide a means of contact with them and the content of the chat did not indicate identities or locations.”
