Vandals targeted Brookfield Park by snapping three recently planted saplings in half.

The horse chestnut trees were planted by Arun District Council along with an ornamental grass border as part of a larger landscaping scheme in September 2013 at a total cost of £1,185.

The attack has since outraged the council.

Paula Elliott, community parks officer at Arun District Council, said: “I am really disappointed mindless vandals have damaged these trees for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

“A huge amount of hard work is undertaken every year by Council staff and our contractors to make Brookfield Park an enjoyable place to visit.”

The vandalism was reported to the council on May 5.

Sussex Police is investigating and is appealing for witnesses or those with any information to call 101, quoting reference number 0774.
