Drink-driving bans following Christmas campaign

Each of the defendants pleaded guilty to drink-driving offences or failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Two did not have car insurance and another had neither insurance nor a driving licence.

Chief Inspector Natalie Moloney said: “Each of these drivers is beginning 2014 with a driving conviction and the ongoing problems that will cause.

“None of them will be able to use the roads legally this year and all face greatly increased insurance premiums if they want to drive after their bans end.

“Thankfully their actions have not led to the deaths of anyone but each of the motorists was selfish enough to take their life and the lives of other road users in their hands.

“Drink and drug-driving remains a problem in Sussex that we are determined to tackle.”

Among those convicted were:

Terrance Flynn, 58, of Ashenground Eoad, Haywards Heath, admitted drink-driving and driving without insurance. Given a 12 month community order and told to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge. Banned from driving for 24 months.

Martin Waddington, 25, of New Town, Copthorne, admitted drink-driving. Fined £250 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £25 victim surcharge. Banned from driving for 14 months.

A total of 98 other people have been charged with drink or drug-related driving offences as part of the campaign.
