George Long, from Halnaker, was travelling to his friend’s house on Sunday when he was confronted by a driver ‘swerving and shouting’ in his car along the A285.

George, believing the man was shouting at children in the back seat of the car, said he ‘kept his distance’ behind the vehicle.

Mr Long, owner of Chichester Fencing and Landscaping, said: “The driver kept slamming his brakes on and continuing, then he leant out of the window looking straight at me shouting at me to pull over.

“I didn’t react as I’m not a confrontational person, I just went around him.

“He then chased me and overtook me outside the Anglesey Arms – it was as he went past I noticed he was waving what looked like a baseball bat.

“He cut me up and stopped in the middle of the road, it was at this point the panic set in and I mounted the kerb to go around him again.”

George said he then tried to get away and thought that he had lost him once he got to Eartham.

“I noticed him catching up with me in my mirror,” continued George. “He approached so quickly I thought he was going to crash into the back of me.

“As I approached Eartham Woods car park he overtook me and cut between me and the car ahead and slammed on his brakes again.

“I tried to go around him once more, but as I came passed he crashed into the side of me knocking me off the road and into a tree.”

George said he shouted ‘the police are on their way’ and the man drove away before he could take down the registration number.

He added: “I’m not worried about myself and I’m not worried about the car, it’s just a piece of metal. But I am worried about if this happens to someone more vulnerable than myself.”

A spokesperson from Sussex Police said the suspect has been described as white with ginger hair and a beard. They added that he was driving a silver Seat which is believed to have damage down one side.
