In the wake of the stabbing, residents took to social media to share their grief and shock.

A man who lived next door to where the fatal stabbing took place described the moment he was woken up by ‘screaming and shouting’.

Five parked vehicles were deliberately set on fire in the early hours of the morning. The flames spread to the frontages of nearby houses in which people were asleep.

A fresh approach to tackling crime in Newhaven was launched in August last year.

The problem-solving pilot scheme was organised by Lewes district police commander Inspector Ed Ripley and supported by other professionals.

Working out of Saxon House in Newhaven, the multi-agency team comprises of police community support officers, Neighbourhood First and housing team members from Lewes District Council, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, the Sussex Community Development Association and Target Youth Support youth outreach team and the domestic abuse Rita Project.

At the time of the launch, Insp Ripley told this newspaper: “It is a really exciting scheme. It is the first time that all of the agencies have been brought together to deploy and work together. It is the first of its kind in Sussex.

“A lot of work goes into the development of something like this.

“It is not a case of bringing agencies to meet and then they go off and do their own separate thing.”

He said as part of the scheme officers will identify hotspots around Newhaven and problem-solve those locations, with partners, where the presence and behaviour of some young people impact on the community.

Influences such as housing and domestic situations will also be addressed, he said.
